FANFIC for TIMELINE year 1994-03

Luthor Junior - A Superman Unleashed Story

A fan fiction story revolving around the world of Lois & Clark: The

New Adventures.

-

Lex Luthor swiveled his chair around behind his large desk. "Failed.

Again." It had been a good plan, but that Lois Lane had interfered

again. And so Superman had escaped with barely a scratch from the

knife that he had given the assassin. Well, had given to an assassin

through several intermediaries. It always pays to be extra careful.

And all he had was a botch of blood, carefully dabbed up by a

forensics expert that was very amenable to being bribed. Good private

schools were just too expensive for a working stiff. Luthor flipped

the vial in his hand. Not that the investigator would have believed he

had a bit of Superman's blood.

Luthor pulled up a phone and dialed a number. Perhaps something could

come of this, after all. "Gretchen, I may have something of use. It

might help with your... special project. I thought that would get your

attention."

-

"Congratulations, you're the proud mother of a healthy baby boy," the

nurse said. The walls behind her were cracked and peeling.

The young woman wouldn't look at her child, fighting back sobs. If

only she hadn't agreed to have this baby for the rich Americans. "I

don't want him. I am putting him up for adoption."

"Are you sure?" the nurse asked.

"Yes! Yes, damn it. I'm sure." Her tears spoke volumes otherwise.

-

"The baby is normal. Even more importantly, he is human to a 99.99%

probability. He matches the phenotype and basic physical description

of Superman, but he's absolutely, totally normal," Gretchen said.

"You spent ten thousand American dollars to come to that decision? He

does not even have a latent aura that you just can not measure?" Lex

asked as he looked over her shoulder at the paperwork.

"There's nothing there to see. Literally, nothing." Gretchen scowled,

quite frustrated by her inability to solve the dilemma. "A Kryptonian

should naturally generate the aura. My machine would then allow us to

duplicate it." Her dreams of being as powerful as Superman were again

dashed.

"So, a dead end."

"I'll have the child given up for adoption," Gretchen replied. She

would be more than happy to be rid of the child.

"That seems a waste of resources. While he might not be who or what we

thought he was, I'd rather invest a little more money and see a return

of some sort. Besides, I'd rather keep him close, just in case we do

discover something about Superman later that makes sense of this mess.

" Luthor smiled nastily.

"Keep him... here?" Motherhood had never been a large factor of the

female scientists thought process.

"Of course. Besides, I'll adopt him as a convenience. If your

calculations are correct, I shouldn't need an heir anytime soon and

this will throw off anyone who thinks I may have enhanced myself."

Luthor couldn't shake the feeling that he would need this child at

some later time, but how? He couldn't tell.

Gretchen looked down at the little tyke in almost horror. "What are

you going to name him?"

"A good question. Can't just call him boy, now can we?" Luthor tapped

a finger to his chin. "Ah, perfect. Lucas, of course."

"I am not cleaning up after some baby. It is just so demeaning."

Lex just smiled. "Of course not. I will hire a nanny. I do not have

time to raise a baby either. Besides, I do not think that either one

of us could be considered very nurturing."

-

"Father?" the young man said at the door to his father's office.

"Yes, Lucas?" Lex Luthor looked unchanged from the sixteen years that

had passed.

"When were you going to tell me that I was adopted?" Lucas Luthor

stepped into the room and the light. His dark brown hair hung into his

eyes in a stylish little curl.

Lex continued reading the report on his desk. "About two seconds after

you asked that question, of course."

"What?" Lucas exclaimed.

"I am a bit disappointed. I had expected you to confront me years ago.

"

Lucas narrowed his eyes. "Can't you and Gretchen have any children?

I've seen the way you look at each other."

"Perhaps at some time. What? Are you worried that I'll replace you at

some point?" Lex finally looked up.

"A bit. I'm surprised you adopted anyone, considering you look

perfectly fit. As a matter of fact, you don't even look like you aged

a day in the last decade."

"Fishing for answers, are you? That's good. I could drop dead at any

time," Lex lied easily. A small smile touched his lips, as Lucas did

not believe him. "It could have just been expedient, too. Or I might

have a much deeper game."

"Superman? Or the Kryptonian enhancement projects?"

A frown graced Lex's face. "I should ask how you know that, but I will

assume that you have already covered up that source of information."

"Of course."

"Don't you have school in just half an hour," Lex asked disarmingly.

"Maybe. It is a very good private school, isn't it?"

"The best money can buy."

"That doesn't surprise me at all. What don't you own, father?"

Lex turned away. "The only thing that money can not buy, of course."

"And what is that?"

Lucas never did get an answer for that. Not even from Gretchen,

although she smiled as if she knew and just wasn't going to say.
