Samantha Carter looked up from her computer terminal as her
commanding officer entered her office. "Sir!" she said as she stood up.
Jack gave her a wounded look and then held out folder. "I understand you wanted this from medical?"
"Ah... Yes, sir!" A quick smile danced across her lips. She took the
folder and removed the alien data crystal and inserted it into a
special data reader attached to her computer. "Exactly what I wanted."
"I thought you said Thor erased all the data on our visitors. And
pretty much told us to not mess with their technology," Jack then
asked. "He just erased the data on their enhancement technology
and their work on a quantum portal. He didn't erase their medical
records. Including this scan of their aura we took," she replied
happily.
"So?" he asked bluntly.
"Thor might be a friend, but the Asgard have never been willing to give
us all the technology we've needed." She stopped what she was doing for
a second. "We need every edge against the Goa'uld, the Replicators and
their like. Technology like this enhancement stuff." "But we
don't have that technology, because Thor erased it," the general
reminded her.
"He, uh, sorta forgot to erase the handwritten notes on the process. Sir."Jack's eyes gleamed suddenly. "Really?"
She nodded.
"How much funding do you need?" he asked casually.
She looked thoughtful for a moment. "At least two or three million dollars."
"Gotcha." He turned to leave her lab then stopped. "Oh, Sam? I'm going to be out of town this weekend. So no barbecue."
She raised an eyebrow questioningly.
"I'm going to be talking to Hamilton in D.C."
-
It was only a week later that Sam had her first prototype cobbled
together. The six-sided chamber was only four feet wide, a mere
fraction of the full civilian system that she was cribbing her design
from. A catwalk encircled it at about seven feet off the ground, making
it easy to access the six synthetic kryptonite resonance laser systems
that radiated as spokes outwards to ten feet from each side. Most of
the resonance system was the special vacuum-sealed chambers
with wafer-thin sheets of translucent crystal matrixes, that would
focus lasers down to a pinprick and then carefully dispersed on the
walls of the actual chamber by an array of Earthly and alien computers.
Air conditioners had been installed underneath because of all the heat
that was being generated. Sam had decided to add something above
though, which was her solar infuser. Using a lot of fiber optics, she
had brought and focused sunlight into the chamber from above.
It was about nine o'clock in the morning when she felt ready to test it
out. Grabbing a pair wielding goggles, she climbed down into the
chamber as it counted down. Now she just had to wait for a few
hours for the process to finish. She started to hum to the music she
had playing in the background.
-
Daniel looked over at Teal'c. "You haven't seen Sam for lunch? I guess we better go and make sure she has something to eat."
"Indeed." The Jaffa smiled at the antics of the other members of SG-1.
It was what made them so human behind the Tauri legends. They took a
platter with a standard lunch from the cafeteria.
The two of them wandered down to Sam's lab, where they were directed to
an old storage room that was much bigger. The opened the door to a
blinding light pulsing from a strange machine. Music was incongruously
playing in the background.
"Um. Sam?" Daniel asked.
"Hey, guys! Watch out for the glare!" her voice called out from inside the device.
"So this is the latest gizmo you've cooked up?" the archaeologist asked. He shaded his eyes.
Teal'c narrowed his eyes thoughtfully. "Are you sure of this device, Samantha Carter?"
"Sure, Teal'c. It's safe. Our friends from that other Earth do this all
the time." Sam crossed her fingers. They didn't hook up a lot of alien
technology to 'improve' it though.
"So, um, how much longer do you have in there?"
"About two more hours," she replied.
"You know, if we were on another planet, I'd probably call this thing an alien energy sauna," Daniel noted.
"Did you tell Jack O'Neill that you were doing this?" the Jaffa asked.
"Sure. I mentioned it in a memo a day or two ago," Sam replied as she smiled.
Daniel winced. "You know he doesn't like doing paperwork. He probably hasn't even seen that memo."
"I'm sure you are making a big deal out of nothing," the colonel replied primly.
-
"What do you mean, Sam is in an untested enhancement machine right
now?" Jack snapped out. He was sitting behind his desk in SG Commanding
Officer's office.
"Well, she said she sent you a memo about it yesterday," Daniel
replied. "She seemed to think that you would be okay with the whole
thing."
"I'm not okay with this." Jack stood up and stormed past his secretary
that had a list of his appointments. "Hold all my meetings for the next
hour, Mike. I've got some important business to deal with," he said
over his shoulder to his assistant.
They all headed to the storage room that housed their very first synthetic enhancement machine.
"Sam?" Jack bellowed out.
"Hi Jack!" she called out from inside the machine.
"Give me one good reason to not have the plug pulled on this machine?"
His voice definitely showed some worry that he was trying to
hide. "Because I only have another twenty minutes to finish up
here?" she replied. "And it hasn't hurt me yet."
"Fine." Jack stared at the computer counting down the last twenty minutes in agitation.
Daniel and Teal'c shared a puzzled look. Was there something they were
missing. Daniel tried to pull Jack into a conversation, but he was even
more distracted than normal.
Suddenly, all of the lasers and lights shut off, leaving just the
normal overheads on. Jack was on his way to scramble up to the catwalk.
"Wait!" Sam called out. "It could be dangerous!" "I
thought you said it wasn't dangerous!" the general called out, even as
he stopped.
"I meant dangerous to you!" Sam grabbed the upper edge of the
enhancement chamber and then with a little hop pulled herself
out. Well, that was what was supposed to happen. What actually
happened is that Sam shot out of the contraption clumsily and bounced
off the ceiling and then fell on one of the lasing systems, slid down
it and then thumped on the ground.
"SAM!" Jack shouted.
"I'm fine! Nothing hurt!" she babbled back as she very carefully stood up. "I don't even think I hurt the vacuum seals and-"
Jack looked up at the cracked concrete ceiling. "You aren't hurt?"
Daniel and Teal'c just blinked, and then shared a quick look. "It worked?" Daniel finally asked.
"Yes!" Sam had a huge grin on her face even as she pulled off the weilding goggles she had worn to protect her eyes.
