GI Jane floated above D.C. in a contemplative mood. She felt numb with grief over her sister's death. As 'Cil-An' she had heard of the death, but it had just fueled her quest for heroism. Lucille Newtrich had merely felt lost for the last day as it truly sunk in, drifting high above the earth. She felt a mockery in the bright red, white and blue spangled outfit she wore. Her cape fluttered in the wind with a snap.

A horrendous crash to the north drew her attention. She rocketed off on instincts from over a hundred 'rescues'. A commuter train had collided with a cargo train on a bridge.

"My baby!" screamed a mother as a two year old girl slipped out of a tear in the train's wall. The train teetered on the edge of the bridge, rocking back and forth as it slid precariously over.

With a woosh, a red, white and blue blur snagged the child and then caught the train. GI Jane lifted the passenger car carefully with one hand and set it back on the tracks.

"GI Jane! T'ank yooo!" the little girl said, her smile bright and sunny even with her missing some of her baby teeth.

"Stay here with your mother!" she replied with a wan smile. She floated up and checked with her x-ray vision up and down the crashed trains.

--------

GI Jane was joined by a teal and purple blur. Within moments, the more heavily injured were carefully moved to a field next to the river. After that, rescue crews were transported to the site so that qualified medical assistance could be applied to the wounded. The truly desperately wounded were flown to the nearest hospital Metropolis as carefully as possible.

Finally they were told that everything was in the trained hands of the paramedics and police.

Ultrawoman looked over at GI Jane quizzically. The other super-heroine was not acting normally. The dark haired woman made a floating gesture and flew off slowly towards a far off roof top of the Daily Planet. "Are you feeling all right, GI Jane?" she asked as they landed.

The blonde-haired GI Jane looked off in the distance. "No, I'm not okay."

"Lucille?" Ultrawoman asked as a hazarded as a guess. "The red kryptonite finally wore off?"

Lucille Newtrich turned in surprise. "How? Wait... General Worthington got to you too... Lois Lane?"

Ultrawoman, nee Lois lane, grimaced at that. "How-?"

"X-ray vision." GI Jane gave a smug grin. A grin that faded. "That means that Superman is really..."

Her grimace turned worse. "Right. Come on, Lucille. I think it's lunch time." In a blur, Ultrawoman turned into the far more normal looking Lois Lane and opened the door to the roof access stairwell.

"That's how you do that!" Lucille exclaimed as she twirled in the same way leaving her dressed in a business dress, blouse and high heels. The ex-criminal followed Lois down into the news room where people were running back and forth. She followed the reporter to her desk and sat in a proffered chair.

"Hello, Lois!" Clark said as he walked over with a cup of coffee and handed it to Lois. He quirked an eye over at Lucille. Much more coolly, he said in greeting, "Hello."

Uncertainly, she nodded. "Clark, right?"

He raised an eyebrow and nodded.

She blushed. "I guess I should say I'm sorry or something," she muttered softly while having a hard time meeting his gaze.

He surprised her by his reply. "Apology accepted. I heard what happened to your sister. And that you are trying to make amends for you past actions."

Lucille suddenly started crying. She had thought she had run out of tears finally, but the too kind words ripped the scabs over her wounded heart anew. She looked up as Clark patted her shoulder carefully. "I feel stupid, crying like this all the time."

"Oops, sorry! I'll come back later," Jimmy Olsen said as he dumped some folders on Lois's desk.

"Isn't that the folder on that terrorist group that we'd heard was trying to get into Metropolis?" Lois asked as she snagged the folder.

Jimmy sent an uncertain glance at Lucille, his forehead crinkling as he tried to place the woman. "That's right. You wanted me to run down that list of names that Ahmad gave you, right?"

"Right."

"Most of these guys just work at local marts or fast food joints. Oh, except for Jamahl Khurma. He's a custodian at the old Lex Biomedical Research Center," Jimmy replied with a shrug.

Lois and Clark shared a quick, worried glance. "Thanks, Jimmy."

Lucille felt an incredible urgency from Clark. "What's wrong?" she asked.

"We've been tracking down a terrorist cell that has been trying to steal biological weapons. An informant finally caved in and got us a list of names. And it looks we finally have the information we needed," Clark said as he stood up. "Rumor on the streets is that these guys are going to steal the weapons at any time!"

Lois leafed through the folder of names very quickly. "Hmm," she murmured to herself. "Most of these guys live out in Brendricks Haven or near there."

The three superheroes went to the rooftop and spun into their outfit and zoomed off into the air. In just moments they landed at the aging Lex Biomedical Research Center. Boldly, they walked in the front door.

"Superman!" the receptionist said. She turned pale and hit a button on her phone. "Mrs. Helms? Superman is here and I think it is important!"

Just a moment later and Mrs. Helms trotted around the corner. "Superman! Is there a problem?"

"We have reason to believe a suspected terrorist is trying to steal something from this company. Does your company currently have anything that could be used as a bioweapon?" Superman asked. Lucille couldn't believe the change he'd made from reporter persona to man of steel.

"Our company no longer makes such items, but in the course of our studies we do generate dangerous organisms. Once they have been fully evaluated, including how to eradicate them, they are disposed of," Mrs. Helms said as she waved them to her office. She opened a safe and checked some papers. She turned to the three super-heroes. "We only have a small sample in lab three. That's one of our high security labs."

"If you don't mind, we would like to verify the safety of your samples," GI Jane said with far more determination than she felt.

"Of course! I understand you are working with the Airforce, is that correct?" the executive asked as she led them past several secure doors.

Superman let his aggravation leak out as he muttered, "Lead lined. Was Lex Luthor directly involved with this company, Mrs. Helms?" He asked of the latter much louder.

"Yes, he was. Though that was before my time. Detective Henderson had found some signs of criminal activity with the previous administrator. The board fired him, of course, but I understand he fled the country." The older woman shrugged her shoulder.

"That was Max James. He'd funded research into cures for chemical weapons," Ultrawoman replied thoughtfully as they passed another checkpoint.

"And sold it to foreign powers at a very high price. The man is a traitor and should be shot," Helms snapped. "This is lab three." She put her hand and eye on a biometric sensor, opening the door.

Everyone tensed as they saw two crumpled bodies on the floor.

GI Jane sniffed the air as Superman checked on the scientists on the floor. "Ether. They've been knocked out."

Ultrawoman nodded even as she turned to Mrs. Helms. "Where would they keep the samples?"

The pale executive nodded at a large, metal fridge. "But we have to seal the lab off! Who knows what contaminates they loosed!"

GI Jane shook her head. "We need to be able to respond quickly. We can decontaminate ourselves easily enough with our heat vision."

Ultrawoman picked up the accompanying paperwork even as Superman checked the fridge for missing vials with Helms. In just a moment of super-speed, they uncovered the missing vials.

Superman scowled. "An anthrax variant? How could you create something like that?"

"Easily!" the executive replied. "We were tasked with creating a broadly based cure or wide spectrum inoculation in case of other countries biological warfare programs. It's considered one of the most likely diseases that will be made into a killer."

Superman didn't look convinced, but nodded. Ultrawoman spoke up as she looked away from the paperwork. "This is some variant you have here. It's infectious from multiple vectors. Air, water and touch."

"Those were the most important things to direct our responses against."

Ultrawoman nodded, but still obviously not totally convinced. "The nearest area of greatest possible contamination is the reservoir. That's only a few miles away!"

Superman, Ultrawoman and GI Jane blurred away through the door. In moments they were above the expanse of water.

"Over there!" the dark haired super heroine shouted. Across the artificial lake, they spotted them next to the water treatment plant for north Metropolis.

The trio swooped up to the car. Next to it stood Jamahl. His face brightened as he saw Superman. A look of contempt filled his face as he casually lifted a modified crossbow from the car's open trunk and tossed it at Superman's feet saying "Perfect! Now the whole world will know that the godless alien scum and his harem were impotent to stop the will of Allah! Soon, all of Metropolis will sicken and die around you!" His voice cracked and his eyes going wild in exultation.

"He's released it into the water! We have to freeze it now!" GI Jane shouted. She took a great breath and then dove into the water, surprising everyone else. Suddenly, the reservoir around the water treatment plant froze solid. With a spray of shattered ice, GI Jane appeared. "Finish freezing the nearest six hundred feet! That should be far enough. I'll head into the plant to shut it down so that it can be properly decontaminated."

Superman leaped into the air, quickly freezing the nearby water. Ultrawoman snatched up the terrorist and left him tied up. She then joined her husband in freezing the water solid. GI Jane appeared just a moment later.

"The water is frozen like you said. Is that going to be enough?" Ultrawoman asked.

GI Jane's face turned serious as she concentrated. "Yes, osmosis would definitely be unable to spread it further away from the plant. I had to freeze the treatment tanks. They'll have to be replaced. Luckily, according to the on-site manager, it takes over an hour for untreated water to process all the way through."

Superman looked at the frozen water. "We'll have to either clean this up or get rid of it."

GI Jane shrugged. "What do you usually do when you want to get rid of something permanently?"

"He throws it into deep outer space," Ultrawoman said with a grin. "Like some certain red lasers that I could mention."

"He threw those into space?" the militarily garbed heroine cried out in dismay.

"What?" Superman asked with a shrug. "I'll need a bit of help getting something this big into space though."

"I hope those don't come back to haunt us sometime," she replied darkly. She walked over the Jamahl. "You, buddy, are going to sing like a birdy and tell us who was behind your little plan. You don't really seem to be the type to come up with something so complicated and long term."

"Allah will preserve me and deliver me from the godless alien heathens!" he shouted back at her.

She lifted him up with one hand, her face showing the depths of her anger. "You will talk. To me or some very good military interrogators. They won't torture you, but they will make your life a living hell until you spill your slimy little guts on the ground and betray your friends," she said vehemently directly into his face from only inches away.

"A miracle will lift from your grasp and even if I should die, I will be praised before the hosts of heaven!" His shirt started to smolder as he shouted, until with his last words he lit up like we has an arc of sunlight. In just a moment he flared bright enough to even blind kryptonians.

"What happened?" GI Jane asked in bewilderment. The only thing left of him was the cloth grasped in her hands.

"I don't know!" Superman said, looking around.

"I'm not smelling anything chemical. It's like he spontaneously combusted!" Ultrawoman said, looking around too.

--------

"Lois! Clark! Great work on that exclusive! The Daily Planet really scooped the competition on that one! And you got the first real interview of GI Jane at the same time!" Perry White said, a grin on his face. "I could almost yodel! But I have more respect for the King than that!"

"Thanks, Chief! We just happened to be lucky," Lois said.

"Come on, Lois! We've got to pick up the girls from the day care center," Clark called out. "See you on Monday, Chief!"

"Hey, look! It's GI Jane!" Jimmy shouted.

Across the room, the large windows opened under super-strong fingers. GI Jane landed on the ground. "I just thought I would let Metropolis know that even though Superman and Ultrawoman have the weekend off, that I will be patrolling the city," she proclaimed pompously.

Lois and Clark shared a quick, surprised look. "Superman has the weekend off?" Clark sputtered out. He ignored his wife's outraged elbow to his ribs.

"Oh, yes. Ever super-heroes need some time off," GI Jane said with a smile. "He must have slipped up and forgot to tell you."

"Hold the paper!" Perry shouted into his phone. "Jimmy! We need to redo the entire front page. Lois, Clark! Someone! Grab that woman for an interview before she takes off!"

"Too late, Chief! She just flew off!" Clark shouted. "Let Ralph write it up! Lois and I have to get our babies right now!" He shot a happy grin at his wife. The whole weekend off from Superman duties? With just his family?

She matched his smile easily. Maybe GI Jane was going to be a good thing.
